Mr Matthew Knowling

Biography

Matthew Knowling is a PhD student with the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) at the School of Environment, Flinders University. In 2010, Matthew completed his BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science. His Honours work focussed on the use of a common surface-subsurface coupling technique (surface conductance approach) in fully integrated numerical hydrology models.

Matthew’s PhD research involves the use of a highly parameterised regional groundwater model of Uley South Basin (South Australia) to:

  1. investigate the relative contributions of climate variability and pumping to aquifer depletion, which is the subject of ongoing debate;
  2. assess spatial and temporal recharge distributions through a sequential regularised parameter estimation strategy (for more information, go to: http://www.groundwater.com.au/projects/assessing-spatial-and-temporal-recharge-distributions-using-regularised-parameter-estimation-of-a-groundwater-flow-model-a-case-study-of-uley-south-basin-south-australia); and
  3. demonstrate the optimum selection of steady-state calibration datasets via linear analysis.
