NATIONAL AWARD WIN FOR GOYDER INSTITUTE

13/05/2015

Goyder Institute for Water Research was recognised at the Australian Water Association (AWA) Awards tonight, winning the National Research Innovation Award.

In less than five years, the Goyder Institute for Water Research has delivered economic benefits for South Australians into the hundreds of millions of dollars based on an investment of just $25 million from the South Australian Government.

Established in 2010, the Institute helps deliver expert scientific advice to Government in a format which helps shape policy and decision making.

The organisation is a partnership between the South Australian Government through the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, and the CSIRO, Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.

Goyder Institute Director Dr Michele Akeroyd said the AWA award acknowledged the Institute’s innovative research model as a demand-driven research organisation.

“South Australians know better than people from other States just how critical water security is to support our economy, environment and wellbeing,” she said.

“We have delivered a number of significant achievements across industry, environment, urban water and climate change. Each of these successes reflects the benefits of a research broker connecting government to research to business right here in South Australia.

“The Goyder Institute has proven its worth as an independent expert science advisor to Government on water-related issues.

"Most significantly, the work on the science supporting the new Murray Darling Basin Plan demonstrates the Goyder Institute’s ability to deliver focused expert analysis and advice, under short deadlines, to support policy considerations and decision-making by governments.

“This is only able to be achieved because the Institute’s operations are based on established trusted relationships between scientists and between scientists and government.”
