Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth Research Centre July News and Events

CLLMM Research Centre July 2025 Newsletter

This month the focus of the Research Centre, the region, the state and even the country has increasingly been directed at the Harmful Algal Bloom concentrated in South Australia’s coastal regions. Our (CLLMM) role in this has been to connect concerned community members with credible information on the Bloom. We have all been pleased to hear there has now been responses from the State and National governments. Through the Goyder Institute for Water Research network, the CLLMM Research Centre has been helping to identify critical research priorities to address knowledge gaps in the understanding of Harmful Algal Blooms in South Australia. These events may be more frequent in the future, so we are needing knowledge to inform decision-making now more than ever.

Generating knowledge to better understand the future so that everybody – community, First Nations and management agencies – can make informed decisions, is what the Research Centre is all about. Our projects are focusing on many aspects of how climate change may impact the CLLMM region, and the outcomes will be available to all.

Inside this issue, we explore how our researchers are connecting with community and hear from Flinders University Honours student Hannah McKennall, who is studying the Rakali – the fascinating native water rat. We also feature our flagship project on Climate Adaptation and Ecosystem Services and introduce readers to the dedicated Working on Country Rangers who are involved in many of the projects, in particular the Freshwater soaks and much more….
