Project Overview

The South Australian government aims to secure South Australia’s water resources in terms of quality and quantity beyond 2050. The Government’s water security plan, Water for Good, includes a number of commitments to manage water supplies effectively, including the adoption of WSUD measures. While considerable work on WSUD targets has been carried out interstate, climate characteristics significantly affect the performance of WSUD systems. One of the primary purposes for developing interim targets for Adelaide is that they are appropriate for the region and that local data such as climatic information is used.

Through the ‘Institutionalising Water Sensitive Urban Design in the Greater Adelaide Region’ project, potential WSUD targets were identified in three main areas:

  • Mains water conservation
  • Stormwater runoff quality
  • Stormwater runoff quantity

Progress Update and Key Findings

Water conservation project targets achieved

  • A comprehensive review of national and international water conservation measures
  • Establishment of water use characteristics for Adelaide a comparative water end use analysis. The analysis utilised single dwelling disaggregated water use data from Perth, Gold Coast and Melbourne with Adelaide’s average annual residential water supply per connection.
  • The impact of rainfall variability in the greater Adelaide region on a range of water conservation options.

Stormwater quality project targets achieved

  • A comprehensive review of local and interstate stormwater quality targets.
  • The impact of rainfall variability in the greater Adelaide region on a range of water quality improvement measures.

Stormwater quantity project targets achieved

  • A comprehensive review of local and interstate stormwater quantity targets.
  • The analysis of two key flow indices in combination to develop a set of quantity targets.
  • The impact of rainfall variability in the greater Adelaide region on a range of water quantity management options and at three development scales.

Project Impacts

The interim targets supported policy development for setting water conservation measures for urban households while the quality and quantity targets were aligned with environment and ecological objectives, with a particular emphasis on Adelaide coastal water protection and other sensitive urban water bodies .
