Professor Mike Steer is the Executive Director of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and a nationally recognised leader in applied marine and agricultural science, with more than two decades of experience across fisheries, aquaculture and livestock systems.
Professor Steer completed a PhD at the University of Tasmania in 2004 and has worked across fish biology, fisheries science, cephalopod ecology, molecular science, fishery reform, gear selectivity and fleet dynamics. This broad scientific foundation has supported the strategic leadership of applied research programs delivering practical outcomes for Australia’s seafood and primary industries.
At SARDI, his leadership focuses on building strong, trusted partnerships with industry, government and research organisations, ensuring science is relevant, credible and directly informs management and policy. Research interests include multi-species harvest strategies in shared fisheries, the impacts of environmental change on fisheries and aquaculture, innovation in estimating fishable biomass, reducing methane emissions in ruminant livestock, and circular economy and value-adding opportunities across seafood and livestock value chains.
He currently plays a key leadership role in supporting South Australia’s response to the ongoing Harmful Algal Bloom, coordinating scientific advice and cross-agency collaboration to guide evidence-based decision-making. Known for translating complex science into clear, accessible concepts, Professor Steer is a highly regarded speaker who connects effectively with diverse audiences at the interface of science, industry and policy.
