Updates from the CLLMM Research Centre

Research teams have ramped up their fieldwork campaign in September. From releasing southern pygmy perch as part of efforts to bring this vulnerable fish back to local waters, to tracking pied oystercatchers during nesting season and monitoring greenhouse gases across the lakes and Coorong, a wide range of projects are helping build a clearer picture of how this unique region is changing and what can be done to support its resilience into the future.

Alongside the fieldwork, the “Stronger Together” community forum brought locals, scientists, Traditional Owners and health professionals together to talk through some of the big challenges facing the region — including harmful algal blooms, bird disease risks, and the emotional toll of environmental pressures. The forum opened space for honest conversations and highlighted the need for clearer communication, more support for community monitoring, and stronger cultural connections. These same themes came through during a visit from the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s executive team, who spent time with researchers, Indigenous Rangers and community members to hear firsthand what matters most in the region. Together, these efforts reflect the power of combining science, culture and community in caring for Country.

Looking ahead, the Centre currently has a Horizon Scan survey open, inviting people to help identify the key questions, challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of this unique and vital region over the next 15 years.

The CLLMM RC is also proud to be part of this year’s Nature Festival, hosting the Flow and Tell event. This event will help explain how the river is managed, its significance to the region’s Traditional Owners, and the opportunities and challenges we face in a changing climate. It’s a great chance to learn, share and connect.
