Recognising World Wetland Day 2026

2026 Theme: Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage

UN World Wetlands Day on 2nd February highlights the global importance of wetlands and the value of traditional knowledge. The Goyder Institute’s research, undertaken in collaboration with partners, including the Department of Environment and Water, CSIRO, Flinders University, and Adelaide University, local expert organisations, First Nations peoples and the community, strengthens understanding of wetland systems, groundwater connectivity, and climate impacts across South Australia.

We work closely with First Nations communities across the state to exchange knowledge and incorporate cultural heritage. This is particularly evident in projects at the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth Research Centre, which foster community wellbeing while creating opportunities for shared knowledge and learning.

Over the past two years, several key projects have delivered new insights to better understand and manage these critical ecosystems.
