Chief Scientist for South Australia visits Goyder Institute for Water Research to discuss future water science priorities

The Goyder Institute for Water Research was pleased to welcome the Chief Scientist for South Australia, Professor Craig Simmons, for a strategic discussion on the future of water research and innovation in the state.

Hosted at the Institute’s Adelaide base, the meeting brought together Goyder Institute’s leadership to explore opportunities for advancing science-led solutions to South Australia’s pressing water challenges. Discussions focused on the Institute’s key research areas, including climate resilience, environmental water management, and sustainable development across the Murray-Darling Basin and beyond.

Professor Simmons highlighted the vital role integrated, collaborative research plays in informing evidence-based policy and shaping resilient communities. He acknowledged the Goyder Institute’s unique position as a science–government–industry partnership and its contribution to delivering impactful research outcomes over the past decade.

Goyder Institute Director, Dr Alec Rolston, said the meeting was a valuable opportunity to align priorities and identify areas for future collaboration.

“We’re excited to work closely with the Chief Scientist to ensure our research continues to address the most important challenges facing South Australia’s water future,” Dr Rolston said. “This engagement helps strengthen the science-policy interface and reinforces the importance of research excellence in driving sustainable outcomes.”

The meeting also included a briefing on the Goyder Institute’s key research activities across a diverse portfolio of water resource modelling, ecological restoration, and community engagement.

As South Australia looks ahead to the next phase of its water and climate strategy, the Goyder Institute remains committed to providing trusted, independent science to support informed decision-making.
